Joe Biden should, hands down, win the Nobel Peace Prize, along with President Trump. And I am completely serious.
Why am I suggesting this to that august group of men in Norway? Because President Trump and Joe Biden actually ended one of America's never ending wars, this time, Afghanistan, a war which had gone on for over twenty years, having begun after the US invasion of that country in October of 2001.
The 19 purported hijackers of 9/11 included fifteen men from Saudi Arabia, but for reasons unclear to the world, instead of invading Saudi Arabia, George Bush and his minions ordered an invasion of Afghanistan. By the time the war was over, there were soldiers there who had not even been born when the debacle started.
Donald Trump fought for peace. I wish he had fought harder. But he began planning for an end to the Afghan war, and to his great credit, Joe Biden completed it
Full disclosure: I am no fan of Joe Biden. Not by a very long shot.
But none of that takes away my appreciation for his continuing on President Trump's policy, and ending this war
Was it handled badly? Yes. Could it have been done better? Possibly. I also suspect that a lot of the things done badly on the ground in that country were possibly deliberate sabotage by elements in our government who did not want this war ended. Never imagine that anyone serving as chief executive has complete control. Those in the White House face daunting opposition from any number of sources, and this war was an enormous money maker for a lot of people and many of such people want to avoid us pulling out of other foreign engagements. So they will do whatever they can do to make such departures as painful and badly done as they can
But the bottom line is that this war is over. Will the lessons of Afghanistan keep us from going into similar disasters? I hope so. President Trump and Joe Biden inherited a mess, but they took care of it. If anyone deserves to be recognized for the cause of peace this year, these men do.
