The end of summer brings on a whole wave of emotions. Probably related to childhood and the end of summer bringing the end of summer vacation, we grow wistful of loss, of things not accomplished, of plans planned but not carried out. We're not the first. The prophet Jeremiah (8:20) spoke of that feeling: "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved." We think about the end of long days, the end of warmth, and a coming of the time when the earth is asleep in winter.
